Preparing a Goodly Heritage: Succession Planning in Theological Libraries

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Theological librarians are twenty-first-century professionals working in increasingly complex environments, confronted by challenges and opportunities in areas like technology, scholarly communications, and user experience. We also represent two vocational realms with a deep respect for tradition: theology and librarianship. In this conversation group, we will talk about the implications of these identities for succession planning, a vital but easily neglected responsibility of every library staff member. Topics we may discuss include practical matters like cross-training and developing and maintaining documentation. We may also delve into broader concerns like the responsibility of organizations like ATLA for developing a professional pipeline and deeper questions such as the role of our religious traditions in understanding how and why we should prepare to hand off our responsibilities to our successors.

In recent years, sessions related to management and leadership topics have attracted enthusiastic participation at ATLA conferences, and this conversation group will provide an opportunity for conference attendees to learn from and offer guidance to colleagues about a very important topic with significant implications for the future of theological librarianship.
