Make DIY Look Professional: Technology for Designing, Mapping and Connecting the Dots

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of new technology available to us as librarians and educators. Which tools have the best return on their monetary and, more importantly, time investment? This session will introduce you to five free and user-friendly online tools that can invigorate your websites, workshops and presentations.

First, we will look at Canva (canva.com), a template-based online design studio that turns a novice into a graphic designer. Second, we will play with CartoDB (cartodb.com), a wonderful introductory tool in the cutting-edge world of GIS mapping. Third, we will explore Tiki-Toki (tiki-toki.com), a program that produces interactive timelines (perfect for both midterm season and your library’s anniversary celebration). Fourth, we will practice using TodaysMeet (TodaysMeet.com), a chatroom style software that can transform a meeting or classroom session into a truly collaborative environment. Finally, we will look at Voyant (voyant-tools.org), a text analysis software that not only provides statistics, but pairs those numbers with stunning visuals.

These tools have been invaluable assets to my own library work, both in teaching and in helping individual patrons think creatively about their research. Bring your laptop and be prepared to astonish colleagues and patrons with your new-found skills!
