On Publishing Essay Collections: Lessons Learned and Tips to Follow

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Principles and practices for producing an edited volume are illustrated with reference to a seven-year project originating in the archives of the Oxford University C. S. Lewis Society that has recently yielded the work, "C. S. Lewis and His Circle: Essays and Memoirs from the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society" (Oxford University Press, 2015). Attendees are introduced to a collaborative editorial process of identifying, selecting, and organizing archival or general collection materials for an essay collection. The presentation addresses technical issues of the process related to multi-format source materials, digitization, and transcriptions, and also describes how to locate a publisher, secure author permissions, and prepare a final manuscript. Consideration is given to additional library related skills and issues beyond the editing task such as making restricted items more widely available, securing institutional support, practicing scholarly communication, and locating funding assistance.
