Library from The Ground Up

The Franciscan School of Theology, formerly associated with the Graduate Theological Union, recently relocated and affiliated with the University of San Diego. Three years later, the school is now located on the grounds of the Mission San Luis Rey, has approximately 60 FTE students, 11 faculty, and for the first time, its own library with one part-time library assistant in addition to the library director. This presentation will share our experience in building this library literally from the ground up: planning and building the library space; acquiring and merging disparate collections of materials, including rare items and special collections; working with the affiliate school library when materials, budget, and equipment were lacking; soliciting, training, and supervising a volunteer workforce; budget allocations over the first few years, as priorities shifted from equipment to materials; digitizing rare material; and finally finding ourselves in a position where we can comfortably take on special projects and draft a strategic plan for the next five years.
