Cutting Edge ‘Down Under’ - Integrating OCLC WorldShare and EBSCO EDS: Our Story

In mid 2015, Camden Theological Library was one of the very earliest theological libraries in Australia to fully implement OCLC WorldShare and WorldCat. The staff of Camden Theological Library were delighted by the enhanced workflows that resulted from this strategy. However, we noticed that relevant digital content, especially from EBSCOhost databases, was not being easily retrieved by patrons when searching WorldCat. Being aware that 20+ North American theological libraries were implementing WorldShare, we explored how they were providing access to digital content. A review of their websites revealed that many were proving ‘tabs’ to enable patrons to search either their print collection or their digital content. Therefore, their search experience did not integrate these two ‘collections’. Camden Theological Library had been using EDS for three years prior to mid 2015, and had been planning to discontinue our subscription to EDS. However, our observations led us to conclude that by utilising WorldCat we were offering a retrograde solution to our patrons. In late 2015 we were advised by EBSCO that it was becoming possible to fully integrate WorldShare and EDS. We were offered the opportunity to be one of the first eight libraries in the world that were embarking on this journey. This is an account of the experience from the perspective of a relatively small theological library in Australia.

Library Manager, Camden Theological Library
This will be the 6th ATLA conference that I have had the opportunity to attend. I greatly appreciate the hospitality of our North American colleagues and the stimulus from learning from their varied experiences. | Since I submitted the Abstract, EBSCO have worked with me to customize some EDS features by developing two apps which could be relevant to other theological libraries.
