Are You Welcomed? A Conversation Toward Building A More Diverse and Inclusive Community in ATLA - All Conference Lunch

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The Diversity Committee recently changed its name to the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and created a new charge to actively engage with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in ALTA and our respective libraries. After the new name and charge were approved by the Executive Director, the Committee agreed that the next step in carrying out the new charge would be listening to the diverse membership of ATLA, in terms of where they are, how they feel, and what their needs are. Therefore, the Committee would like to invite all who are interested in sharing experiences and discussing ideas about bringing a cultural change in an open-minded and hospitable environment. Following a very brief presentation by the Committee on the new charge and vision, the session will focus on the conversation among participants. Some of the questions that will be asked are as follows: As a member of ATLA and/or a participant in the annual conference, what has your experience been like? Do you feel welcomed in the conference? Do you feel your presence and voices are acknowledged and valued? Do you perceive ATLA and its member community as culturally diverse and inclusive? If your immediate responses to these questions are not positive, what do you think the barriers to diversity, equity, and inclusion could be? Where and how do you think the Committee can work to bring a change, though small? By attending this session, you will learn the Committee’s vision and goals while contributing to the shaping of the Committee’s priorities.
